Welcome!

Teaching and discussing AI in the classroom can seem daunting! That's why we are sharing thoughtful lessons and resources to support teachers interested in learning and teaching AI.

Inspired by the Your Voice is Power music program, our AI lessons combine technology, the arts, and the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation.

Provincial teaching standards do not currently identify explicit requirements for AI literacy so our lessons are modeled on the AI literacy skills defined in the UNESCO AI Competency Framework for students.

What is the Role of AI in Songwriting?

UNESCO AI Literacy Topics Covered: Human-centered mindset; Ethics of AI; AI Technologies and Applications; AI System Design

In this lesson, students explore the role of AI in the songwriting process and develop AI literacy skills. The lesson is split into three sections:

  1. Songwriting. In this section students will: Learn privacy best practices when using generative AI; Learn limitations of generative AI such as hallucinations and bias. Compose or review lyrics for a song about an Indigenous role model created without using AI.
  2. Evaluate AI Songwriting. In this section students will: Learn how to write a prompt for generative AI; Learn and reflect on plagiarism and copyright with respect to AI; Listen to the opinions of an Indigenous songwriter on AI as a songwriting tool; Generate lyrics for a song about their selected Indigenous role model and compare the generated lyrics to the lyrics they composed without AI; Learn about plagiarism and reflect on appropriate use of AI for schoolwork.

In this lesson, students learn

  • How to recognize traditional AI and Generative AI
  • How AI is trained to recognize patterns and uses those patterns to make predictions
  • Limitations and ethical considerations of AI
